Paw Photo Guide
What Makes a Great Paw Photo?
Your photo should be:
Straight on
Well lit
In sharp focus
Showing the entire paw
Close or high quality enough that its details can be seen
Capture Every Detail
The tiny ridges and textures in your pet's paw are what make every Pactile Expression unique. The cleaner and sharper the photo, the more texture we can preserve in your finished keepsake. If possible:
• Wipe away dirt or mud
• Trim excessively long fur covering the pads (optional)
• Gently spread the toes if needed
• Use natural daylight whenever possible
Different Pets, Same Process
Pactile isn't just for dogs. Cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds, and many other companions can all become Pactile Expressions.
For very small animals or paws that are difficult to photograph, placing them on a clean sheet of glass or acrylic and photographing from below often creates the clearest result. If you have a glass coffee or dining table, you can set a size reference down next to them on the table and grab the photo below - just make sure to focus on the paw before you take the photo!
Include Size Reference (Recommended)
If you'd like your Pactile Expression recreated at your pet's actual size, include a size reference in one of your uploaded photos. For the most accurate sizing, the reference should be on the same plane as your pet's paw - meaning it should be touching the same surface and sitting at the same height as the paw pads. Objects held above or below the paw can distort the scale.
Accepted size references include:
Our green Textured Memories sizing token (available at local Colorado events)
A ruler placed beside the paw
A U.S. quarter

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Blurry photos
Heavy shadows across the pads
Paw hidden by fur
Cropped pads
Camera at an angle
Wet or muddy paws
When you clean your pet's paw, dry it with a cloth towel. Fun fact - our Expressions are so detailed that, if you look closely, you can see a couple flecks of paper towel on Gretta's paw print that stuck on after it was dried with one. Oops.
Too much fur keeps this from being a great photo - try wetting the hair and see if you can hide it between the pads. You can also try shaving or cutting it, but the veterinary professional on our team wants to remind you that scissor work is best left to professional groomers.

A Tiny Detail That Tells Their Whole Story
Every nose is completely unique—the little bumps, lines, freckles, colors, and textures that made your companion unmistakably them.
A Pactile Nose Expression begins with a photograph and transforms those tiny details into a tactile keepsake you can see and feel.

You may already have the perfect photo.
We found this perfect photo of Darmok’s nose from 6 years ago - 2 years after he died. We chose to leave the mud on his Pactile Expression - it captured who he really was - a goof!
Focus on the Nose
The most important part of your photo is simple - can you clearly see the texture of the nose?
For the best results, choose a photo where:
The nose is sharp and in focus
The texture, bumps, and details are visible
The photo is taken straight toward the nose
There is enough light to see the natural surface
The nose is free of hair, moisture, or debris like mud (unless you’re preserving the goof!)
The closer and clearer the nose, the more detail we can preserve.
Finn wouldn’t stay still for an outdoor photo, so a flash had to be used to highlight all the texture. Well, a flash AND a treat.
Orientation Doesn't Matter
Upside down? Sideways? Tilted? That's okay.
Your photo does not need to already look like the final artwork. During our refinement process, we can rotate, crop, and prepare your Nose Expression for the best display. The important thing is that the photo is taken straight toward the surface of the nose rather than from a steep angle.
A clear upside-down nose photo is often much better than a blurry right-side-up one.
Use this strategy to take your photo when your pet is none the wiser - sleeping, waiting for a treat, or whatever Tendi is doing in the reference picture.
Tendi is an active puppy and we had many failed attempts trying to get a non-blurry nose picture from her. MANY.
The solution was to wait until she was upside down with T-Rex arms and closed eyes to come in for the shot. You can see that she noticed the camera at the last second.

Not every dog will let you get in there with a ruler, but it’s great if you can! Wash was VERY confused when I took this.

Look Through Your Favorite Photos
Oftentimes, people who order Pactile Nose Expressions are looking to boop a snoot that’s been gone for years. You may be surprised by what you find when you look through old photos. Remember, that picture of Darmok at the top of this guide we made 2 years after he was gone.
Look closer - many great Nose Expressions come from:
• Close-up portraits
• Silly nose-to-camera pictures
• Sleeping photos
• Snuggle pictures
• Older favorite memories
Even if the whole photo isn't perfect, we may only need the nose.
Natural sunlight brings out all of the details in Wash’s nose. We remembered to wipe his nose before snapping the shot!
Body Feature Guide
Capture the Feature That Makes Them Unique
Every companion has details that make them unmistakably unique. Whether it's the graceful curve of an ear, the intricate pattern of a turtle's shell, the elegant shape of a feathered wing, or the familiar wag of a tail, a great photo helps us faithfully recreate the features that tell your pet's story.
This photo guide is especially helpful for pets such as pocket pets, horses, reptiles, birds, and other, less common, pets.

Capture the Whole Feature
Your photo should clearly show the entire feature you'd like us to recreate. Examples include: ears, wings, tails, feet, shells, scales, horns, beaks, or anything unique to your pet. Avoid cropping off edges whenever possible.
Focus in on the Fine Details
Be mindful what the star of your photo is - it’s easy to focus on the wrong thing. If you want to capture the pattern of the scales, close and focused is better. If you want to capture the whole crest of a bird, pick which feather should be the main focus. Here are some other tips.
Use natural daylight
Keep the feature in sharp focus
Remove dirt, mud, or debris if appropriate
Smooth feathers or fur naturally if desired
Avoid heavy shadows
The more detail we can see, the more detail we can preserve.
When capturing these fine detail shots, keep in mind what your subject is - here it is okay that some of the feathers are blurry because the desired focus was Tuffy’s eye. The eye and feather detail there is perfect!
When photographing turtles and tortoises, make sure you get the whole of the shell in your photo, even if you were only thinking about memorializing a small part

Species-Specific Tips
Birds:
Spread the wing naturally if possible.
Photograph against a simple background.
Avoid motion blur.
Rabbits:
Photograph ears from directly beside or above
Avoid folded ears unless that's how you'd like them preserved
Capture some of the head in the picture to allow for a good transition
Turtles/Tortoises:
Photograph the shell from directly above (or below)
Ensure you are encompassing the entirety of the shell
Sometimes part of the shell is better as art than the whole thing - we can be creative to match your goals
Horses:
Clean hooves before photographing - you can also ask your farrier to take the picture!
Tails and manes make great Feature pictures
A good horse nose is definitely a pic worth having
Pocket Pets:
Place them on a clean sheet of glass or acrylic and photograph from below to capture paws/feet

Reptiles:

Focus on Your Pet
The clearer your pet appears, the better the finished artwork. For the best results:
Eyes in sharp focus unless you are going for a different focus like this nose-focused picture
Remember to check your focus
Good natural lighting whenever possible
The entire face visible (unless intentionally cropped)
High-resolution images whenever available
