About Textured Memories

For more than 25 years, I've worked in veterinary medicine, helping families celebrate, care for, and say goodbye to the pets they love. Throughout that time, I've witnessed firsthand how deeply our animals shape our lives and how important it is to preserve the memories they leave behind.

But Textured Memories didn't begin as a business.

It began with a mistake.

In March of 2026, a pet named Blizzard was cremated before the clay paw print their family had requested could be made. A simple checkbox had been missed, and with it, the opportunity was gone forever.

When the hospital manager called to ask if I could help, I honestly didn't know if it was possible.

But I had to try.

Fortunately, the veterinary team had collected ink prints before Blizzard's cremation. Drawing on my background in digital sculpting, miniature painting, photography, and design, I began creating a replacement. 

The result was good - good enough to gain a lot of attention online - but it wasn't good enough. Not for me. Not for Blizzard.

So I started over.

And then again.

And again.

What began as one family's memorial slowly became an obsession with authenticity. I wanted to preserve more than the shape of a paw or the outline of a nose. I wanted to faithfully capture every ridge, contour, texture, and tiny imperfection that made each impression uniquely their own.

But solving the print wasn't enough.

The more I worked on Pactile, the more I kept coming back to Blizzard.

The problem wasn't that someone didn't care. The problem was that an irreplaceable memory depended on a checkbox being checked, a request being communicated, and someone having the time — and the skill — to capture it before the opportunity disappeared.

I knew Blizzard's story wasn't unique. I've worked in hospitals where one technician was the person who could make a beautiful ink paw print — and somehow, they were always off when you needed them.

I've seen teams struggle to get a clean impression from a furry paw, a tiny paw, or a pet whose family deserved better than the fifth attempt, taking up valuable tech time that could be used to help other pets.

I've seen ink prints waiting to be made because the team was managing appointments, emergencies, treatments, phone calls, and everything else that doesn't stop simply because a family has just said goodbye.

And I've seen what happens when something gets missed. These aren't failures of compassion. They're failures of a process that asks busy veterinary teams to create something irreplaceable at one of the most demanding moments in the hospital.

I started wondering what if we captured every paw?
